Exercising is a great way to keep your body and mind healthy and to ensure you remain active as you age.
A recent study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, has revealed only two thirds of Australians aged over 65 participate in physical activity. From this number a quarter of people said walking was their only form of exercise.
Walking is an aerobic activity which helps to exercise your heart and lungs and can reduce your risk of heart disease. However the research suggests walking should be combined with other physical activities to exercise all areas of your body.
ABC Health and Wellbeing has provided a list of other activities you can do to improve your health and fitness. This list also details the percentage of people aged over 65 who already participate in this activity.
- Lawn Bowls (9.4 per cent)
- Aerobics (9.1 per cent)
- Golf (7.7 per cent)
- Swimming (6.4 per cent)
- Gym workouts (5.2 per cent)
- Cycling (3.2 per cent)
- Tennis (2.9 per cent)
- Dancing (2.1 per cent)
The best exercise will engage your brain as well as your body. For example Tai Chi and dance can help maintain your balance, coordination, concentration and attention.
Consult with your doctor or health care professional about the best exercise routine for you.
